Safely through the cold season
Driving in fall and winter means slippery roads, poor visibility, starting problems and frozen locks and windscreens. During this period, the risk of an accident is six times greater than in summer. So it is worth checking your car thoroughly. Our tips and the experts from Bosch Car Service can help.

Safely through the cold season

Powerful starting – even in icy temperatures
Winter demands a great deal of performance from car batteries, since the colder a battery is, the less power it has. To protect your battery, only activate on-board components like the radio, lights and air conditioning system once the engine is running. A weak battery should be exchanged in good time before winter begins. The Bosch Silver car battery is extremely resistant to short journeys and cold starts. The power-pack with long-term performance is particularly resilient due to its silver technology (grid geometry with silver alloy). It also keeps water consumption low and prevents corrosion, which is a significant advantage in cold and wet weather.

To prevent nasty surprises on cold, wintry days, have your v-belt checked too. If it is too loose, it will start to slip from its runner and fail to charge the battery properly.

Although most modern batteries need little maintenance, we have a few tips on how to prepare your battery for winter: Make sure your battery is free of dirt, moisture or corrosive traces, since they are ideal terrain for leakage currents that slowly weaken the battery. Pay special attention to ensuring that the contacts are clean and dry. They must be removed before you can clean both poles with a cloth. Always remove the ground cable before releasing the positive pole. Then treat the poles with pole grease.

Seeing and being seen – even in extreme situations
You are only safe on the road if you can see and be seen even in bad weather. So make sure you have good visibility despite rain, fog or snow. The extensive lights technology program from Bosch can help. It provides extra strong lighting power for headlights, indicators and rear lights, rotating beacons and working or additional lights to ensure that you can see and be seen perfectly well even in bad weather. Our tip: Make a contribution to road safety and clean your lights every time you are at a gas station. Dirt can reduce light
strength by up to 80 %.

Good visibility: wiper blades and windscreen wiper systems
To remove the thick film of mud and salt from your windscreen, we recommend frost-resistant cleaning water for your wiper system and a strong wiper blade. The Bosch Twin wiper blade provides high-speed wiping and good visibility even in bad weather and at high speeds. Its modern dual material technology makes Bosch Twin especially resistant to bad weather and ensures high-performance wiping in the worst conditions – without any rubbing or squeaking. Drivers also value how easy the Bosch Twin is to attach. Every wiper blade is equipped with the Quick-Clip universal adapter, allowing it to fit any wiper arm and making it child's play to change blades. The new wiper blade system can be easily fitted to many car models.

One more tip for winter: After filling your wiper tank, use the wiper blade system until the tubes, pump and spray nozzles have filled with the antifreeze solution, to prevent them from freezing up.

Safely on track: brakes and tires
When driving in the cold season, the dynamic forces are different from those in summer. Rain, dirt, snow and black ice on the road can quickly throw a car off track. To ensure you drive safely in winter, your car must apply the forces to the road effectively when setting off and in bends. Test your brakes early enough and prepare for the difficult conditions with large-profile tires. For ideal traction, your summer and winter tires should have a 4 mm profile on any surface. Although winter tires are not yet required by law, experts recommend their use in temperatures below 7 °C. Their material is softer than summer tires, giving considerably better grip in low temperatures. We recommend changing to winter tires as early as October and not returning them to your basement or garage until March.

Security systems like Bosch ESP® and ABS help stop wheels from locking and skidding from the start. But even such systems can not defy the laws of physics. So please ensure you drive safely and with circumspection.
