The on-board power plant
Today, a multitude of electrical and electronic devices in your car provide greater comfort and security, better driving characteristics and lower emissions. To make sure they are always supplied with sufficient electrical energy, Bosch has developed its small LI-X "power plants." The performance of these new generators is higher than those of any others before - but they are exceptionally compact, economical and quiet.

These days, getting into your car means sitting down in a veritable high-tech pack. In addition to active safety, drivetrain and engine control systems, cars include a range of comfort systems that make driving a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable experience. They include the on-board computer, power-window unit and seat adjustment as well as high-performing sound systems and the air conditioner.

In recent years, the number of power consuming units in cars has increased considerably, even in mid-range and small cars. All these "midgets" must be supplied with electrical energy continuously. This is why the generator and battery need to be extremely effective.

How many "consumers" do you know?

How many "consumers" do you know?

Inyour car, a multitude of technical components work in perfect interaction.

How many of these power "consumers" that make your life safer and more comfortable can you think of spontaneously?

Here is a list of the most important consumers:

• Headlight, direction-indicator lamp, tail light, stop lamp, interior lighting
• Radiator blower
• Engine control unit
• Fuel injectors
• Fuel-injection pump
• In-tank unit with pre-supply pump
• Throttle-valve actuator
• Ignition coil
• Starter
• Transmission-shift control
• ABS/ESP® hydraulic modulator
• Air-conditioner compressor
• Air-conditioner blower
• Electrical heaters
• Alarm system
• Vehicle immobilizer
• Electrical/hydraulic power steering
• Display instrument
• Car radio/CD player
• Navigation system
• Hands-free telephone unit
• Central locking system
• Power-window unit
• Sliding sunroof drive
• Seat adjustment
• Rear window heater
• Airbag control unit
• Cigarette lighter
• Air-mass meter
• Lambda sensor
• Sensor, e.g. temperature sensors (air, fuel, water, oil) and oil quality/level sensor

An efficient source of energy

An efficient source of energy

To make sure that sufficient electrical  energy is always available for these devices, Bosch has developed a series of small "power plants." These LI-X generators are not larger or heavier than conventional generators, but they provide 40% more performance at minimal noise levels. Due to their low weight and high efficiency, they achieve fuel savings of up to 0.5 liters per 100 km.

An strong team: Generators and batteries from Bosch
Sufficient energy must always be available, even when the car is stationary and especially in situations of short-term high demand. Efficient Bosch batteries like the "Silver-Plus" make sure it is. They are charged by the LI-X generator when driving and supply power in stationary state and at low engine speed. The battery copes with the high temperatures in the engine very well and sustains a stable state of charge for extended periods, even if vehicles are not in use for a long time during winter. The flow of energy is controlled by an electronic energy management unit. It monitors the battery and coordinates the consumers and the generator to keep the battery's state of charge as stable as possible. That extends the life of the battery and ensures that starting is never a problem.
