When the first portable power tools with rechargeable NiMH (Nickel metal hydride) batteries came to market their technology had not yet reached market maturity. Compared with rechargeable conventional NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries NiMH type batteries still had some disadvantages to cope with. However, the only valid criticism directed against the incumbent was the higher weight.

Bosch engineers, therefore, focussed their attention on this soft spot of the NiCd batteries and employed for the first time Lithium ion batteries in their small screwdriver, the IXO. Rechargeable Lithium ion batteries preserve their charge when not in use and are known for their long lifetime. Despite those favourable features no-one has ever thought of using them in portable power tools, until Bosch came up with the IXO, the worldwide first Lithium ion battery-powered screwdriver, which sets Bosch apart from its competitors.

The IXO is a featherweight of 300g with an integrated Lithium ion battery providing 3,6 V nominal voltage and 1 ampere-hour capacity. The drive shaft equipped with a suitable transmission ratio provides up to 180 rd/min and a torque of 275 Nm. With this power, the IXO drives screws with up to 5 mm in diameter into wooden boards.

The sense of rotation of the IXO can be switched from right to left just like in the bigger models, and with the motor off, the shaft is automatically blocked. The Bosch IXO complete with battery charger, set of screw tips and hexagonal drill chuck, is presented in an unusual packaging – a tin box of sweets.

The IXO - small dimensions, great future - has recently been launched.
